Fashion Week Backstage: Miyabi’s NYFW Debut

I had the incredible privilege of supporting Team Miyabi during their exhibition in 2022 and throughout New York Fashion Week. It was an unforgettable experience with a wonderful group of people that I know I’ll never forget. As we geared up for the runway, we decided to capture the intricately designed show opened in some of New York City’s most iconic locations. Our photoshoot adventure took us from the hustle and bustle of Times Square, to a serene escape in Bryant Park and finally – to the the timeless and historic Grand Central Terminal. I was so excited to have the opportunity to photograph one of Miyabi’s pieces in such unique and iconic surroundings.

Despite the sweltering heat on that particular day, the entire team worked tirelessly to capture the beauty of her designs as we strolled through the city streets. Even in the midst of the various layers and weight of the garment, Shoko Tamai, of Ninja Ballet, posed and modeled with the utmost poise and grace, showcasing the professionalism expected from a seasoned dancer. Needless to say, I was not only impressed, but also quite warm – as the temperature soared to over 100 degrees. Nonetheless, the dedication and passion of everyone involved made the experience truly magical.

On the big day, from the break of dawn to the soft glow of the moon, the hours slipped away in a whirlwind of activity. Regrettably, my lens didn’t capture as much as I had hoped, but witnessing the unfolding of the day was truly remarkable. Meeting the gracious coordinators of Global Fashion Collective and the models who breathed life into the show added a special touch to the experience.

After the meticulous process of selecting models, the president of Miyabi took charge, guiding and preparing them for the catwalk. When the moment arrived, the models showcased unparalleled finesse as they adorned Miyabi’s creations and gracefully proceeded down the runway. Shoko Tamai opened the show and stole hearts with her show stopping choreography.

As the models walked the runway, I couldn’t help but notice the palpable emotion within the entire team. Witnessing their creations showcased on the international stage was a profound moment—a testament to their vision and hard work receiving the recognition it deserves. Their journey, marked by challenges and triumph, has brought them to this remarkable point. They’ve not only crafted a distinctive brand image, but they’ve reinvented the look of traditional kimono that are not just attire, but true art people can connect with on an individual level. The audience, too, was captivated by their work. Their expressions and reactions demonstrated their collective admiration for the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic vision embedded in Miyabi’s designs.

As the day drew to a close we packed up, stepped outside and were greeted by the most spectacular rainbow that stretched across the entire NYC skyline! Its colorful hues seemed to be congratulating them, celebrating their shared vibrancy and Miyabi’s newfound status as an internationally recognized designer. It was a fitting conclusion to such a striking event! We concluded the night where it all began, at Globus Washitsu – right at the heart of the city that never sleeps.
